Castro Urdiales Spain

is located in the easternmost coast of Cantabria , surrounded by spectacular scenery full of steep cliffs and beautiful beaches . Although it has prehistoric remains of great interest, the city boasts a rich mainly two thousand year history linked to the Roman Empire , where today it is Castro was the colony of Flavióbriga. Fishing, whaling and trading port, the fishing village of Castro has reached our days as one of the most dynamic cities in Cantabria. The sea may have less weight today than before Castro's economy, but it is certainly the sailor air the most characteristic of the city. In its streets, especially near its port, it is still possible to breathe this fishing atmosphere and taste many of its gastronomic specialties, obtained all of the sea. Inside, it houses magnificent carvings of the thirteenth century to the seventeenth century, an outstanding collection of works of jewelry from the late Gothic and even a picture of Christ crucified Zurbarán . At the end of the promontory and next to the church, stands the medieval castle , massive fortress overlooking the sea access, converted lighthouse . The castle holds the lantern lit for the first time in 1853, and since then is operating as a lighthouse.
